One of the best things about having a Pet is being able to give them treats and see their excitement when they know something good is coming. Last summer, in our July blogs, we discussed several low or no-cal ways for treating your Pet. Since longer daylight hours often provide an opportunity to spend some additional time with your furry friends, we’ve updated that list!
Metabolism boosters–
- When taking a walk, keep in mind mornings and evenings offer cooler temperatures, which will help both you and your Pet stay more comfortable
- Visit a stream, lake or other water area to beat the heat, but don’t forget your Pet’s lifejacket— a real life-saver in certain settings
- Some of the simplest toys are the best— sticks certainly are one. Dogs love to fetch sticks! Both dogs and cats love to investigate why a stick is making noise as you drag it across the cement. And chewing a couple bites on the end of a stick is almost as good as a rubber toy
- Join a training class for learning new tricks, practicing old tricks and making new friends
A Zen moment for your Pet—
- A gentle pat on the head as your Pet is sleeping in their favorite spot can be a very Zen moment
- A fluffy, freshly laundered Pet bed or blanket is great for those Pets that love a cushy spot to lay down or sleep
- Rubbing the center of the forehead just above the eyes is a very tranquil spot for many Pets
- Share your lap while the family watches T.V.
That special reward—
- It tastes better if you have to work for it, so have your Pets sit before they get their food
- Pets who act as the “automatic vacuum” in the kitchen can benefit from having part of their daily food given as treats while you are in the kitchen or other areas of the home
- If you’ve got a water hound, it might help to have them sit and wait while you put down the fresh water bowl for inspection
