Avoid Pitfalls When You Have Visitors

Posted on by Lynne Hudlow

Last week we had out of town guests. In preparation for their arrival we made sure the beds were clean and made, we had plenty of yummy food in the house and lots of fun stuff on our agenda. Turns out it was the unplanned events of the weekend that made the lasting impact.

My cats are a part of my family, so the daily to-do’s are like second nature to me. I check and clean the litter box, make sure everyone’s fed and has clean water, and give them lots of love. What I now realize is that what comes naturally to me does not do so to those who don’t share their home with cats.

I know my cats use the toilet seat as a springboard into the bathtub so that they can play with the shower curtain. For this reason I always make sure to close the toilet lid, both to aid in their acrobatics and to prevent any mishaps. Unfortunately I failed to share this pearl of wisdom with our visiting guests and my little kitty wound up feet first in the toilet bowl, drenched and unnerved. Quickly, our friends learned to close the bathroom door before the kitties could scurry in behind them and, of course, to close the lid when they were done.

Doors and toilet seat lids are probably not the first items to come to mind in cat care. And although cats are pretty good at taking care of themselves, there are things we can do to help make sure they’re safe and happy. For more cat proofing ideas, check out this Animal Planet resource.
