Looking for ways to ‘go green’ in your house? You may want to start with your kitty litter.
According to Wikipedia, over 2 million tons of cat litter, or approximately 100,000 truckloads, ends up each year in landfills in the U.S. alone. Primarily this is not biodegradable or renewable and adds unnecessarily to the waste burden. Green solutions are even showing up in cat magazines periodically where they cover different types of natural sourced cat litter.
Traditional clay or clumping litters are common in stores but when looking for natural sources for green cat litter products, look for products containing:
Corn
Wheat
Soy
Pine or other wood/bark products
As many families move to greener living, purchasing natural sourced cat litter is one more step you can add to your “go green” list. Finding a litter that your cat(s) like and will use is key. During your search to find a product your cat likes, it is a good idea to buy in smaller size containers.
Leaving a better footprint in a landfill helps the environment, but how does it affect the pocket book?
1. Research green products by checking common Pet store websites and consider:
Brand
Product type (clumping or non-clumping)
Special features (deodorizer added, natural deodorizer, flushable)
Biodegradable / green
2. Research price at your local stores after you have the basics on which green products you might try. Happy shopping for a greener home.
Just for Dogs:
For those of you that walk your dogs, there are also biodegradable doggie poop bags. Look for them at your local pet store or search the web to find where they are available in your area. Thanks to the good neighbors that pick up after their Pet!
