Zero-calorie treats
Posted on July 22, 2008 by Lynne Hudlow
Giving treats to our Pets is one of the good things in life. It offers instant gratification for us both, owners see a happy Pet and the Pet thinks they really scored! Aside from edible treats, which when over-used can lead to weight problems, there are some healthy options to consider that will help you bond with your Pet while boosting metabolism, treating for a reward, or just adding a Zen moment to life.
The benefits of treats of affection:
Boost metabolism–
- Take your Pet on a walk around your neighborhood
- Find a new park to check out
- Have your Pet chase the laser pen as you move the light across the floor-most cats love this game
- Play a game of fetch with lots of high 5s for bringing the ball (or toy) back to you
- Roll the car window down (just a little) so your dog can sniff all those good scents in the air
- Give your Pet a bath and watch them run around trying to dry themselves off (a towel draped across the back sometimes stimulates the run)
A Zen moment for your Pet–
- For those Pets that like a tummy rub give them an extra 5 minutes
- For Pets who have a passion for soft toys like stuffed animals, buy a new one occasionally, or better yet, launder the old one and make a big deal out of giving it back
- Brushing and grooming is a big bonus especially if there are no existing tangles-you may have to experiment with different brush types to get the perfect one for your Pet
- Gentle Pet massage can feel so good and be very relaxing for both you and your Pet
That special reward–
- A good ear rub (if your Pet seems sensitive about his/her ears, have your veterinarian check to make sure there are no problems)
- Praise your Pet and tell them how smart they are – enthusiasm is catching
- Make a big deal about how good your Pet looks just back from the groomer or after a bath
- Fresh catnip treats for cats (or plant a bunch, a member of the mint family, in a safe spot in the backyard)
- New chew or fetch toys for dogs-make sure they are size appropriate – not too big or small
- New feather toys for cats to pounce and carry
- New tug toy for dogs, with tugging applied by you or a family member
- Other special attention your Pet likes-the list is endless!
